Practicing Your Art While Traveling

Do you like to travel and you want to keep practicing your art while you are away, but you are unsure of how to actually do that?

Do you feel like you can only create art in a specific room or area of your home or studio?

I’m here to tell you that it is very possible to practice your art while your travel and it can be as easy or as complex as you would like.

I suggest that you start out small and simple until you gain your confidence with practicing your art while traveling. My favorite way to be create art when I’m not at home is to bring a small sketchbook that fits into my bag. I like the moleskin 6x4 inch sketchbook. Your art medium is completely up to you. Sometimes I keep it simple and just bring a pencil or pen and sometimes I bring my travel watercolor set and a paintbrush.

One of my favorite experiences was taking my watercolor set to the beach With me. I used a paper cup from my breakfast for water and sat on a piece of driftwood and painted. I even had a little mishap and dropped my wet watercolor palette into the sand. Instead of getting annoyed about “messing up” my set, I just went with it! The sand actually added a cool effect to the watercolor as it dried on the paper.

One of the biggest hurdles that you might have to jump over is your fear of looking weird creating art in public. Now, this might not be an issue for some, and for others it might be the very thing that is stopping you from creating art out in public while you are traveling. But if it, you can start out small. Maybe try sketching for just 5 minutes in public. You will start to feel more comfortable creating art in public in no time, which means that traveling won’t have to limit your creative time!
